In honor of National Library Week, we’re featuring libraries we’ve encountered in our travels.
Our first stop is the first public library in California – the Monterey Public Library. Established in 1849, the Monterey Public Library started out as a shareholders library with the first members paying $32 a share to establish the library. Today it is a busy, vibrant place open to all and the largest public library on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.
- Al fresco reading and research.
- MPL has an extensive and impressive non-English language collection.
- This maybe due to their proximity to the Middlebury Institute and the Defense Language Institute.
- MPL was established the year before California attained statehood.
